Getting started
Codebreakers is a team word game of secret agents, inspired by Codenames. It takes about two minutes to learn and plays great in a voice call.
Start a game
- In Discord: join a voice channel, open the Activities menu (the rocket ) and pick Codebreakers. Everyone in the call can hop into the same game.
- In a browser: open the site, sign in, press Create room and share the 6-letter code or invite link.
- Discord and browser players can play in the same room.
Teams and roles
- You and your friends are the agents. Split into two teams (red and blue); each team picks one spymaster and everyone else is an operative.
- The board has 25 word cards. Only spymasters can see which cards are their team's cards, which are harmless bystanders and which one is the assassin.
- Not playing? Watch as a spectator. Spectators can join a team mid-game if the host allows it (if you played on a team this game, only that team).
A turn
- The spymaster gives one word and a number, e.g. “Ocean 2”: the word links two of their team's cards. Tip: tap your cards first and the number follows your picks.
- Operatives discuss, then tap a card and press Reveal. You get the number + 1 guesses.
- Your team's card? Keep going. A bystander or the other team's card ends your turn.
- The assassin loses the game on the spot. Find all your team's cards first to win.
Clues can't be (or contain) a word that's still on the board. Hosts can relax this rule.
Clue ideas
- Look for connections across several cards: Moon, Wolf, Night could be “Howl 3”.
- Avoid clues that also point at the assassin.
- A small number that's safe often beats a big risky one.
- Rooms can allow drawn clues too: the spymaster sketches instead of (or as well as) typing.
Next steps
- Try other ways to play in Game modes: co-op Duet, Pictures, Sudden Death, Three Teams and more.
- Hosting? See Rooms & hosting for settings, privacy and room codes.
- Questions? Check the FAQ.
Talk it out
The game is best in a voice call, but every room also has a text chat: the round button in the bottom-left corner.
